Tybee Mayor Touting Hazardous Bike Ride to Savannah
| Local Government |
Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman wants to enlist some brave bicyclists to navigate a hazardous U.S. 80 from Tybee to Savannah.
The idea is to highlight the dangers the roadway and its bridges pose for people who want to peddle along it.Buelterman will have his own skin in the game. He’ll be taking part in the Nov. 8 Savannah Bicycle Campaign that will have bicyclists travel from Tybee City Hall to Savannah City Hall.City Council agreed to waive the $100 special event fee that would be required for the escort north on Butler Avenue.
The 9 a.m. ride, the mayor said, is to bring attention to the dangers posed by the bicycle trip and the need for road improvements to accommodate bicyclists as well as segregated bike lanes on bridges along U.S. 80.“You’re taking your life in your own hands,” he said of the hazardous trip.Tybee government and tourism officials see potential in bringing more “eco” tourism to the island. Safe biking from Savannah to Tybee would mark significant progress in reaching that potential, they say.
