Tybee Prom’s “A Complete Change of Latitude” Big Success!

This year’s Tybee Prom 2009, an annual fundraising event of the Tybee Beautification Association, was a resounding success. Demery Bishop chaired the event and said he was very pleased with the turnout, and everyone behaved, for which he was grateful. The prom was held at the American Legion Post 154 on Tybee’s north end, with entertainment provided by “Second Chance,” a group from Jesup that played beach, soul and rock 'n' roll from the 60’s and 70’s. The “Prom” was created almost ten years ago by Sandy McLeod, and held at City Hall with a D.J. That first year, people showed up in old prom dresses or ones they acquired at local consignment shops. McLeod had on a gorgeous purple gown Saturday night she had bought at Goodwill that afternoon for $5.00, keeping the tradition alive. The Prom Committee this year included Bill Cannon, Alice Eisner, Lyn Randall, Karen Rhodes and Beth Tanner and Demery. One of the highlights of the dance, in addition to door prizes called out during the evening, was that one purchaser wins half of the total ticket sales for the night. This year’s winner was Sherri Simmons who $890.00 in the “half and half raffle.” The association conducts two annual cleanup drives of Tybee beaches in September and April, and sponsors the Adopt-A-Highway program along U.S. 80 throughout the year, as well as other beautification programs around the city. |
